Domestic Cat Lineage

The domestic cat lineage has its origins in the Mediterranean region about 8to 10 million years ago. The black footed cat of South Africa is believed to be the first of this group of six species to diverge. The jungle cat and sand cat follow. The domestic cat, European Wildcat and African Wildcat emerged much later. Molecular testing indicate that the European Wildcat and the African Wildcat are a single species.
